Preparing for exams

At the risk of sounding preachy, let me give a few pieces of general advice as the exams approach.

(1) Try to read each chapter of the notes at least three times, possibly before you review the coursework or past exams. This means that you read once to get a general feel, once again carefully working all the examples out for yourself, and then a third time for revision.

(2) Similarly for the various problems. Several have expressed concern about correctness of their solutions to past exams. There is no better way of learning than by solving those problems several times so that you feel confident about your own solutions.

(3) Of course this will require considerable time commitment, say 12 hours per day for a month or so, if you take into account all the courses. But remember, this period is one of those few rare opportunities in life to study something substantial really intensively.

(4) Crucially, this requires you to simplify all other arrangements in everyday life.
